About JPEG / JPG Compression:
JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) utilizes a lossy compression algorithm designed specifically for continuous-tone photographic images. By converting image data from the RGB color space to YCbCr, the algorithm separates luminance (brightness) from chrominance (color info) and downsamples the color channels since the human eye is less sensitive to color resolution details. The image is then divided into 8x8 pixel blocks and processed using Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) and quantization, which discards high-frequency detail based on the selected quality level. This process typically achieves a 10:1 or 20:1 compression ratio with very little visible degradation. Compressing JPG/JPEG assets prior to web publishing is essential to satisfy Google's Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) performance metrics without introducing muddy compression artifacts.
Best Practices & Pro Tips:
- Keep quality between 75% and 85% for the best balance between size and visual clarity.
- If converting from PNG to JPG, transparency will be replaced with a white background.
- Use our target size search mode if you have file attachment upload caps.
